Place 57: Courthouse & jail

1905; 1929; 1985

Steps and clock overlook the central intersection. The jail is treated as part of the civic complex. Building dimensions and the relationship to the separately named Town Hall are not established.

About Courthouse & jail

Derry’s courthouse and jail form a civic complex overlooking the central intersection. The courthouse steps and clock are visible elements in the 1929 Bradley Gang massacre, while the jail belongs to the route of the 1905 mob that seized Claude Heroux and carried him toward Canal Street. Combining the two functions in one mapped place reflects their close narrative association across periods. The complex is not automatically equated with every reference to Derry Town Hall, which may denote a separate building.

Why this pin is marked A

Named in the novel. The street or the site is named in the text; the exact lot is the atlas’s.

The complex is level A because the courthouse steps are fixed beside the massacre junction and the jail is the clear starting point of the route down to the Canal. These repeated civic relationships support a central location. The source does not establish whether jail and courthouse occupied one building, adjoining buildings or a larger parcel, nor how Town Hall related to them. The footprint and internal arrangement are reconstructed; the civic site and its street connections are dependable.
