About War Memorial / canal portal
The War Memorial stands at the downtown point where the open Canal disappears beneath the streets. Earlier benches occupied this area, making the portal both a piece of water infrastructure and a small civic gathering place. Its location links the canal’s visible concrete reach with the covered section under central Derry and anchors several nearby historical scenes. This memorial is separate from Memorial Park at the Standpipe: the similar names refer to distinct sites with different functions and settings.
Why this pin is marked A
Named in the novel. The street or the site is named in the text; the exact lot is the atlas’s.
Level A is supported by a direct relationship between the monument and the place where the Canal goes underground, reinforced by the independent reconstruction of the covered channel beneath Main Street. That identifies the portal area with strong confidence. The monument’s exact plot, orientation, benches and relationship to individual curbs are not specified. The marker and small enclosure are therefore illustrative, while the association with the canal transition and downtown street network is the reliable element.
