About City Dump / waste-treatment site

Derry’s city dump occupies a gravel pit in the Barrens, reached from Kansas Street by Old Lyme Street, the only road driven into this part of the lowland. In 1958 it is a rough municipal disposal ground associated with junk cars and discarded appliances. By 1985 the dump has been replaced by a modern waste-treatment facility, turning the same approach into a marker of civic change. The map shows the two phases together because they belong to one functional site across time.

Why this pin is marked A

Named in the novel. The street or the site is named in the text; the exact lot is the atlas’s.

Level A is supported by the named approach from Kansas Street, the setting in a gravel pit and the later replacement of the dump by the treatment plant. These facts establish the site’s place in the Barrens and distinguish it from the abandoned coal and gravel pit farther on. The precise boundaries, internal road, refuse areas and 1985 plant footprint are not described. Their shapes are proposed, while the access route and succession of uses are well anchored.
