Place 44: The Losers' dam
June 1958On the smaller western arm, not across the entire broad Kenduskeag. The split is about 64 m upstream and the reunion of the channels roughly 180 m farther toward town. The detailed sheet follows that local arrangement.
About The Losers' dam
The Losers’ dam belongs to a smaller arm of the Kenduskeag within the Barrens, not to the full width of the principal river channel. The water divides upstream, passes around a narrow piece of low ground and rejoins farther toward town. This local arrangement gives the children a manageable stream to block while keeping the broader river geography intact. The dam is chiefly a 1958 feature, closely associated with the clubhouse, the Tracker field and paths descending from Kansas Street.
Why this pin is marked B
Inferred. Worked out from routes, distances and what stands next to it.
The dam is marked B because the source supplies unusually useful local measurements: the branch separates roughly seventy yards upstream and rejoins about two hundred yards toward town. It also establishes that the blocked watercourse is an arm of the Kenduskeag. What remains uncertain is how that small geometry fits the river’s unmapped bends and banks. The detailed sheet preserves the stated sequence and approximate distances, but the exact dam coordinate, channel widths and island outline are reconstructed.
