Barrens

Place 43: Losers' clearing & clubhouse

1958; overgrown 1985

Accessible by the path from the Kansas Street bridge and near the river. The smoke-hole is the clubhouse itself, not a second location. The exact clearing position is inferred. Only its surface entrance is mapped.

About Losers' clearing & clubhouse

The Losers’ clearing is the concealed gathering place reached from the Kansas Street bridge by a path into the Barrens. In 1958 the children build an underground clubhouse there, using its smoke-hole as the opening to the same structure rather than as a second site. The clearing sits within the river landscape and close to the routes leading toward the dam. When the adults return in 1985, vegetation has reclaimed the open ground and only the remembered location guides them.

Why this pin is marked B

Inferred. Worked out from routes, distances and what stands next to it.

Level B reflects a location assembled from movement and proximity rather than an address. The bridge path, the nearby river and the relation to other Losers’ sites define a plausible part of the Barrens, but no measured distance fixes the clearing. The atlas marks only the surface entrance and does not attempt to map the underground room. Its exact coordinate, size, path alignment and 1985 remains are interpretive, while the access route and general setting are source-based.
