Place 46: Ben's fall into the Barrens
June 1958Through the whitewashed Kansas Street railing above a steep slope and culvert. His subsequent flight toward Old Cape puts this on the Kansas bank; the exact break in the fence is unknown.
About Ben's fall into the Barrens
Ben’s fall marks a break in the whitewashed railing along Kansas Street above the Barrens. Below the road, the ground drops steeply toward a culvert and the network of paths and channels in the lowland. After going through the barrier, Ben continues across the lower terrain toward the Old Cape side, so this point functions less as a destination than as the sudden threshold of a route. The marker records that transition on the Kansas bank during June 1958.
Why this pin is marked B
Inferred. Worked out from routes, distances and what stands next to it.
Level B is appropriate because the street, railing, steep descent and later direction of travel establish the correct bank and general corridor. They do not identify a numbered property, intersection or measurable break in the fence. The plotted point is chosen where the reconstructed Kansas Street slope can connect naturally to a culvert and the Old Cape route. Its exact position, the form of the railing and the culvert alignment are therefore interpretive details.
