Place 47: Entry pumping cylinder

1958; 1985

The broken pumping cylinder used to enter the drains, beside the Kenduskeag, downstream of the lightning-struck tree. It is not explicitly identified as municipal Pumphouse #3. Only the surface access is shown.

About Entry pumping cylinder

The entry pumping cylinder is a broken piece of drainage infrastructure projecting from the Kenduskeag embankment. It provides access to the underground system used in both 1958 and 1985. A lightning-damaged tree serves as a nearby reference, while other cylinders along the waterways show that this is one member of a wider municipal network. The atlas treats it as a surface entrance beside the river and keeps it distinct from the larger facility known as Derry Pumphouse Number 3.

Why this pin is marked B

Inferred. Worked out from routes, distances and what stands next to it.

This entrance is level B because the riverbank setting and its downstream relationship to the damaged tree are described, but the text does not connect the cylinder to a street address or unique mapped structure. The presence of several similar outlets adds uncertainty. The selected point preserves the movement along the Kenduskeag and the required bank access. Its precise distance, elevation and underground connection are reconstructed, and identifying it with Pumphouse Number 3 would overstate the evidence.
