About Derry Public Library

Derry Public Library is a major civic landmark on Kansas Street and one of the clearest architectural complexes in the atlas. The older adult library faces the street, while a children’s wing stands behind it, connected by a glass corridor. The site is active in both 1958 and 1985 and later serves as Mike Hanlon’s workplace. Its position also organizes the nearby end of Costello Avenue, the Community House, and routes toward the Barrens.

Why this pin is marked A

Named in the novel. The street or the site is named in the text; the exact lot is the atlas’s.

The library is marked A because it is placed at the junction of Kansas Street and one end of semicircular Costello Avenue. The front-and-rear relationship of the adult and children’s buildings, including their connecting passage, further constrains the site. These details support the complex and its role in the street network across both periods. Exact setbacks, parcel lines, wing dimensions, and the curvature of the adjoining streets are not surveyed, so the drawn architecture remains reconstructed.
