1906; ruins 1958; mall 1985

About Kitchener Ironworks / Derry Mall

Kitchener Ironworks and Derry Mall occupy successive layers of the same site at the northeastern end of the Barrens. The Ironworks belongs to the industrial and disaster history of 1906; its ruins remain meaningful in 1958. By 1985 the mall occupies the former field. Old Cape lies behind the site to the west. The atlas uses one marker to show how an industrial ruin becomes a modern commercial complex while retaining its relationship to the Barrens.

Why this pin is marked A

Named in the novel. The street or the site is named in the text; the exact lot is the atlas’s.

The site is marked A because the mall’s replacement of the former Ironworks field is explicit, as are the site’s position at the northeastern end of the Barrens and Old Cape behind it. These links join the historical and modern uses to a stable part of the town’s geography. They do not provide surveyed field limits, ruin locations, mall dimensions, or the exact western boundary toward Old Cape. The shared marker is well anchored, while both historical and modern footprints are interpretive.
