Place 82: Merit Street culvert

April 1958

The culvert discovery associated with Matthew Clements, at a blocked-off part of Merit Street near the turnpike works. Merit is in Old Cape. Exact position of the culvert is proposed.

About Merit Street culvert

The Merit Street culvert is associated with the discovery of Matthew Clements in April 1958. It lies at a blocked-off outer section of Merit Street in Old Cape, where the planned turnpike extension would cross the road. The feature combines ordinary drainage infrastructure with Derry’s unfinished highway works and the edge of a residential district. On the atlas it sits directly on the outer street segment rather than floating elsewhere in the Barrens or construction zone.

Why this pin is marked B

Inferred. Worked out from routes, distances and what stands next to it.

This location receives level B because Merit Street, its blocked endpoint and the projected turnpike crossing define a specific outer-road context. They constrain the culvert much more closely than a district reference alone, but do not identify its side or exact engineering position. The marker has been aligned with the reconstructed road segment. Its opening, orientation, distance from the barrier and relationship to the future highway grade remain inferred cartographic details.
